In Uganda, three different levels of education (or grades or classes) require students to take national exams. These students are called candidates. They take their exams in October and November (depending on their level), and wait for the results to come in January or February. (Our school year begins in early February.)
In 2024 we had seven candidate. Four were finishing primary school and three were finishing what is called Ordinary Level of high school. These test results determine what they qualify for in the way of continuing education. They are one major factor our staff considers in deciding the next steps for these boys. We believe that every boy is unique with different skills, capabilities, desires, personality, etc. that are factors in which path is bast for him. Whatever path they take and complete, we consider a success. This is especially true when we consider that these boys were on the streets before they came into The Kabale Shepherd Center.
Three of the four candidates who finished primary school have just begun high school. The fourth has begun a vocational apprenticeship to learn the skill of carpentry. The three candidates finishing their Ordinary Levels, we have decided to have them continue high school for the final two years, called Advanced Levels. We are hopeful that all seven will be successful with the direction they are taking.

The candidates are pictured above from an outing at Lake Bunyoni to celebrate all they’ve accomplished so far.
