Many of our boys at The Shepherd Center started school late, or even had their education interrupted with multiple years when they were unable to attend.
One of our priorities is putting them in school, and giving them an opportunity to read and write in English, learn math skills, and more.
However, because of their background (lack of school, malnutrition, drug use, abuse, etc.), many of our boys really struggle with school. Plus, many of them are in class with other children who are much younger than them. It can be hard to stay motivated considering these issues.
So, when our boys do well, we try to recognize it. We want to encourage them to continue to do well, and inspire others to also work hard.
A few of our boys in primary school finished the 2018 school year in the top of their classes! To celebrate, we took them out for a special supper at a little restaurant in town.
At the Christmas party we honored each of them in front of all the boys and the guardians, and gave them a small gift. We are proud of these boys for their hard work and dedication to school.
Please pray with us that they continue to do well, and improve in their knowledge and skills. Pray for all of our boys that they remain motivated to stay in school, despite their challenges. Pray for the staff that we would help and encourage them in this journey. Pray that God will use their education to equip them for adulthood that will bring honor and glory to His name!

Bernie and I are so proud of all the effort these young men have expended and especially Moses. As his sponsors, we have a bit of a glimpse into the struggle.
When he promised us in a letter that he would work harder in school, he was good to his word!
